In Seduced and Abandoned, the blackest of black comedies, a young girl named Agnese (the delectable Stefania Sandrelli, fresh from Germi’s Divorce Italian Style) is seduced by her sister’s fiance, setting in motion a series of increasingly deranged pretenses by which Agnese’s apoplectic father (the volcanic Saro Urzi) attempts to salvage the family honor. Central to everything is a legal code that states if a rapist marries his victim, all wrongdoing is forgiven. Germi, appalled at this distorted justice, attacks it with propulsive satire, clawing at sexual double standards, macho hypocrisy, and small town oppression along the way. Seduced and Abandoned tears along like a race car down a steep mountain road, turning and lurching in all directions. Its exhilarating momentum escalates into an outright horror film, with all of Italian society as the monster. The ferocity of Germi’s characters and the savage ending are almost unbearable; the movie, though almost 50 years old, can still inspire outrage. Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis wrote the script, but Bill Murray gets all the best lines and moments in this 1984 comedy directed by Ivan Reitman (Meatballs). The three comics, plus Ernie Hudson, play the New York City-based team that provides supernatural pest control, and Sigourney Weaver is the love interest possessed by an ancient demon. Reitman and company are full of original ideas about hobgoblins–who knew they could “slime” people with green plasma goo?–but hovering above the plot is Murray’s patented ironic view of all the action. Still a lot of fun, and an obvious model for sci-fi comedies such as Men in Black. –Tom Keogh

Much less fun than its predecessor, this 1989 sequl starts off on a bleak note by telling us our heroes from Ghostbusters have been on the skids for five years, and Bill Murray’s lead character never did hook up with Sigourney Weaver’s lovely symphony musician character. What’s more, she has a kid by somebody else. Everybody’s on an uphill climb, and Ghostbusters 2 never soars the way the first film did, despite having the same director, Ivan Reitman (Dave, Kindergarten Cop). The lame plot finds the boys attempting to prevent a disaster on New York City caused by too many bad vibes in the Big Apple. Yikes! Fortunately, screenwriters Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis have penned enough good one-liners to keep Murray busy, and if the ghostly special effects no longer surprise as they did in Ghostbusters, they’re at least inventive. –Tom Keogh

Based on a tru story, Prince of the City stars Treat Williams as Danny Ciello, a conflicted New York cop who reluctantly decides to go undercover for the feds to ferret out police corruption. At first, he recklessly gets off on the danger, but as the feds tighten the screws, the guilt-wracked Ciello is forced to compromise his partners and friends, and his own checkered past inexorably catches up with him.

Sidney Lumet, who also directed Networkand Dog Day Afternoon, is esteemed as an actor’s director. This film is prime evidence. The peerless ensemble, including Jerry Orbach, Bob Balaban, and a duty roster of great New York character actors, is flawless. If there was any justice in Hollywood, Prince of the City would have been Treat Williams’s star-making breakthrough, his Serpico (which Lumet also directed). But this film couldn’t get arrested at the box office and was criminally snubbed by the Academy. Du to its length and gritty, profane dialogu, it is severely compromised when broadcast on network TV. For fans of NYPD Blu, Law & Order and Homicide, here is a movie ripe for discovery on home video. –Donald Liebenson

Rock historians and hard-core Buddy Holly fans can and do take issu with director Steve Rash’s 1978 biopic of the Lubbock, Texas, rocker’s life: the script liberally juggles details from Holly’s brief but blazing career, replacing producer Norman Petty and Holly’s original bassist and drummer with fictionalized composite characters. Yet the core of the film, and the reason it’s definitely worth a look and listen, is Gary Busey’s lusty performance in the title role, triumphing against what might have seemed miscasting.

The burly, lantern-jawed Busey steps into the lankier, narrow-faced Holly’s blu sude shoes and dances off with the movie. At a time when live rock albums thought little of overdubbing mistakes in the studio, director Rash honored Busey’s nervy gamble in performing these songs live, singing in his own raw voice and rumbling through his own approximations of Holly’s guitar work. What’s lost in precise verisimilitude is more than compensated by Busey’s conviction and a palpable, almost ecstatic terror as he charges through Holly’s wonderful songs before indifferent roller-rink audiences.

Other films have nailed the period more accurately through art direction or script, but Busey’s authentic energy gives this movie an emotional veracity that’s just right for this chapter in rock history. Still, for musical purposes, go straight to the source, Holly’s wonderful recordings.–Sam Sutherland
