Unlike Disney, which has its trademark character, Mickey, there really isn’t one Hanna Barbera character that you can slap the company name on. You have so many celebrated shows and characters, everyone is surely to have their celebrated. From Fred Flinstone, to George Jetson, Yogi, Huck, Top Cat, and Scooby Doo, there are unprejudiced too many to save on top as the distinct fan current.

One thing is for definite, one of the staple characters and my approved is Yogi Enjoy and his beloved sidekick, Boo Boo. They are constantly getting in anxiety with Ranger Smith, either for stealing picnic baskets, or trying to elope from Jellystone Park. Of course, many should be able to exclaim that the characterization of Yogi came from Ed Norton of the Honeymooners (while Fred Flinstone was Jackie Gleeson) .

First appearing in the Huckleberry Hound Reveal in 1959, Yogi was snappy stealing scenes, which led to his beget expose. There were not a ton of episodes, compared to the other HB shows, but it’s simplistic characters and plots made it one of the most fun in all of Hanna Barbera land. The gimmick of him trying to leave Jellystone was frail several times in the HB world: Magilla Gorilla trying to procure out of the pet store, and Wally Gator and The Hair Beget Bunch always trying to race the zoo.

While these DVD’s include the unique early 60’s shows, Yogi of course lived on in numerous specials and appearances over the years. He is smooth the mascot for Jellystone Campgrounds around the country. There has been heaploads of licensed Yogi memorabilia sold from around 1960 factual up to the point to day, and continues to be a solid secure on any Hanna Barbera collector’s lists.

For the Hanna Barbera and/or Yogi lover, this collection of classics is a must. After already releasing Scooby-Doo, Top Cat, the Jetsons, Wacky Races, Penelope Pitstop, and The Flinstones, this edition was long overdue in my mind! Of the many zany quotes Yogi threw at the viewer every single episode, I will leave you with one of my favorites, as I pull a Snagglepuss and prepare to exit, stage left:

“The deeper you go in the woods, the more nuts you accumulate!” — Yogi Bear

The cartoons in this collection are ample and timeless. But I was disappointed that the episodes are not assembled in the same manor they aired. When you catch an episode you only peer the three cartoons that were featured in that particular episode. You do not earn the theme song, bumpers, and closing credits!

In my belief, the Yogi Enjoy Song is one of the greatest theme songs in TV history, and it’s a shame to not have before each episode as you come by ready to dive support into Jellystone Park.

There is a special feature that allows you to seek the theme song, and the bumpers…but since the DVD is titled as “The Complete Series” I was expecting to secure the episodes in their new broadcast versions.

That aside, it’s a expansive DVD with tons of tall cartoons making their DVD debut. My two year aged son and I open off each morning with a round of these classic cartoons before we originate our day!

While Hollywood is filled with movie stars, it can boast of only a scant few bona fide actresses. Jodie Foster, the consummate professional, is the cream of that exiguous prick, and I respect no other actor or actress on earth as worthy as I respect her. Nell is a testament to her unlimited talent as well as her unmatched commitment to what she does. The character of Nell is a role most actresses would never reflect taking; it’s a far too difficult challenge to meet for a film that holds dinky promise to bring in money hand over fist. For Jodie Foster, though, what matters is the account to be told, not the glamour or the projected box office receipts. She gives an absolutely incredible performance in this film, one that has deserved far more attention than it has received; as I write this, there is not even a DVD version of the film available. If Nell is mentioned at all, it is almost always in reference to Jodie’s Foster nudity in the film, and I would like to say straight out that her nudity is very tastefully done, vital if not absolutely critical for the anecdote, and in no draw gripping.

Nell is a poignant, emotional drama that saddens as well as inspires you; it is the kind of tearjerker in which your tears of empathy and peril are accented by a smile and sense of heartwarming joy. The legend is residence deep in the wilderness of western North Carolina, where an ragged woman has lived for years all by herself. People always belief she lived alone, at least, until she died and the local doctor discovered a pitiful woman-child hiding inside the shack, the only home she had ever known. Nell’s mother had suffered a stroke many years earlier and spoke with a pronounced speech impediment; as a result, Nell speaks a tongue that is almost completely foreign to both the local doctor and the psychiatric professional he calls in from Charlotte. Dr. Lovell (Liam Neeson) becomes a guardian angel of sorts to Nell, fighting the courts and the mental health professionals to hold Nell in her native environment as opposed to being stuck in some institution where she will be treated as a lab subject. He gets three months to work with Nell himself, and his potential foe in the produce of psychologist Paula Olsen (Natasha Richardson) becomes his ally in time, as they both work with Nell to learn her new language and prepare her for a life completely unlike that which she has always known. In her enjoy special design, Nell helps the two doctors as mighty as they attend her, yet their ability to protect her from a dire future of lonely clinical existence remains in doubt up until the very extinguish.

Neeson and Richardson are extraordinary in their roles, but Jodie Foster is simply fabulous. She had to learn a completely unique, invented language as well as adopt a wide range of meaningful facial and body expressions and current mannerisms in order to picture this “wild child” as a very genuine, very human individual. Nell is easily one of Foster’s most impressive performances, and how she did not rep an Oscar for this role is beyond me. It should also be famed that Foster produced as well as starred in this unforgettable film. The scenery, I might add in closing, is also spectacular. Filmed largely in the Nantahala National Forest in Graham County, North Carolina, a status honest west of my gain home, Nell is a radiant peruse to scrutinize in more ways than one. Hollywood needs more noteworthy, animated films such as this.

In “Nell,” Jodie Foster wows us, as usual, with a deeply felt, passionate performance. She is Nell, the “wild child” daughter of a backwoods aphasic hermit woman, who raised her all alone with no human contact. Nell’s speech is all her absorb — it is a striking combination of a private language she had once shared with her deceased identical twin sister, and an imitation of her mother’s speech. Her mother, as I mentioned earlier, had aphasia, which includes major speech processing problems. Nell’s speech was the basis for the title of the play upon which this film was based — “Idioglossia.” (I occupy, for anyone out there who’s into things like this, that the accurate term would have been “idiolect,” as the term for a language spoken by only one person.) Natasha Richardson and Liam Neeson bring constant fancy and warmth to Nell, and to the film, as medical/social-work professionals who attempt to fracture through to Nell by trying to learn her language. In the background lurk The Media, and The Scientific Establishment, both of which threaten at any moment to swoop in and compose Nell’s life glum. The film builds to a heartrending and passionate, albeit rather unrealistic, courtroom self-defence speech by Nell, in which she calls the precepts of current civilization itself into ask.

Liam Neeson’s performance is described by one of the editorial reviewers on this page as being “at his teddy hold best.” I reflect that sounds slightly emasculating — he keep more certain, warm energy into this film than many actors project in their entire careers. Present some appreciation! Arrive on!

Anyone who enjoys this film should also be told about “Wild Child,” a Francois Truffaut film that deals, through decidedly less rose-colored glasses, with a just memoir that was very similar to this one. Another film that has determined parallel resonances, in the sense of a “freakish” individual seeking a chance to be themself in the face of major obstacles coming from the scientific establishment, is “Charlie,” starring Cliff Robertson and Claire Bloom.

I plan about giving this movie four stars, only because it puts Nell in the rather unrealistic space of delivering a profound courtroom speech. I decided to go with five, however, because the basic energy of the movie is so terrific. Absolutely worth checking out.

“Jerichow” revisits James M. Cain’s “The Postman Always Rings Twice” in a rural and economically stressed dwelling of Germany. Writer/director Christian Petzold seems to have been inspired to some degree by both of the renowned film adaptations of Cain’s modern, the noir classic “The Postman Always Rings Twice” (1946) and Italy’s unauthorized “Ossessione” (1943) . But “Jerichow” isn’t a remake. It’s a German update that looks at commercially successful Turkish immigrants and Germans who are inspired to reckless and secretive behavior, perhaps to recapture some optimism at a point in their lives when they realize things haven’t gone as planned.

Thomas (Benno Furmann) is encourage home after serving in the German army in Afghanistan, now in need of a job to inaugurate renovations on the house his recently deceased mother has left him. Ali Ozkan (Hilmi Sozer), who owns 45 snack bars in the place, asks Thomas to form his daily rounds of deliveries for him when his driver’s license is suspended for DUI. In spite of his heavy drinking, Ali is an demanding and perceptive businessman. He seems to want Thomas to learn the business, and he encourages Thomas to glean to know his beautiful German wife Laura (Nina Hoss) . But Thomas and Laura sight something of themselves in each other and come by the attraction irresistible.

This is stale territory, but it usually doesn’t feel like it. The characters befit their particular time and location. All are criminal in some sense, and all are sympathetic in some sense. We don’t find to know Laura well until gradual in the film, but the uneasy relationship between the two men develops over course of the film. Their mundane conversations design suspense, as the audience gets the creeping impression that things will turn out badly. Both men are enigmatic, frustrated, and hiding something that will have to give at some point. Kudos to Hilmi Sozer for making Ali a fully realized character, perhaps even more tragic than the rest, even though he is not a protagonist. In German with optional English subtitles.

The DVD (Cinema Guild 2009) : Bonus features are a theatrical trailer (2 min), trailers from 3 other Christian Petzold films, and a “Making-of Documentary” (25 min) . This includes interviews with the director in which he discusses the characters and the socio-economic milieu in which the film takes residence and interviews with actors Benno Furmann and Nina Hoss, who discuss their characters. Petzold’s comments are particularly provocative and thoughtful. Bonus features have English subtitles that cannot be turned off. English subtitles are available for the film, and those can be turned off.
